I am an Associate Professor in Neurolinguistics and Language Development at the University of Groningen, and an enthousiast about all things brain and language, with a special interest on our brain's amazing capacity to learn.
I am the Principal Investigator (PI) of Child Language Disorders lab (CLaDis lab), in the Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG).
I am the PI of the NWO-funded VIDI project "Verb processing and verb learning in children with pediatric posterior fossa tumours", another NWO project (XS) on the relation between "Educational success and language impairment", and the project "Verbal Learning in Young Children", funded by SKNPNN. Take a look at the outputs of my research, done together with the students in the CLaDis lab, here.
Teaching students on the link between language and the brain, including hands on methods to analyse language and brain data, is something I very much enjoy. You can see some of my teaching materials here.
I learn a lot from discussing our research with the general public, and with relevant parental and professional associations. In this page you can see posts about our outreach activities and here are links to interviews/media appearances.
Understanding verb(al) learning and verb and sentence processing in children and adolescents with language disorders, namely Developmental Language Disorder and populations with lesions to the cerebellum (namely, posterior fossa tumours).
Developing, validating, and standardizing diagnostic tools and methods to diagnose language impairments, with a focus on psycholinguistic approaches that make use of word properties in diagnosis, as well as word learning, and verb and sentence processing.
Identifying neural correlates of language impairments in these populations, using structural neuroimaging (MRI) methods.
